Engineering Students Build Autonomous Water-Cleaning Robot to Clean Shiv Ganga Pond (2026)

Engineering students in Jharkhand have developed an innovative solution to a pressing environmental issue: a water-cleaning robot designed to tackle the problem of polluted water bodies. This autonomous robot, named 'Nature's Revival Bot', is set to make a real impact by cleaning the Shiv Ganga pond at Basukinath Dham during the Shravani Mela, a significant religious event. The project, which began as a final-year engineering endeavor, showcases the potential of student innovation to address real-world challenges.

The robot's design is a testament to the students' ingenuity. It employs a motor-driven track-belt conveyor system, capable of collecting floating waste from the water's surface and depositing it into a net-covered collection bucket. This system can efficiently remove various items, including plastic bottles, polythene bags, clothes, and paper. The robot is powered by three motors: a Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) hub motor for the propeller, a gear motor for the conveyor belt, and a servo motor for steering. It also features a photoelectric sensor to detect obstacles and prevent collisions, ensuring safe operation.

One of the key strengths of this robot is its ability to operate for extended periods. Built on plastic drums with an aluminium frame, it runs on a 48-volt hybrid battery, combining lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. This setup allows the robot to clean around 8 square feet of water every minute and has an operating range of one kilometre. The collection bucket can hold a significant amount of waste, but the garbage must be manually removed once it's full. The robot's remote monitoring and control capabilities make it ideal for continuous operation during the busy pilgrimage season.

The project's success has been a result of the students' dedication and the support of the Dumka district administration. Koushal Kumar, a project team member who has since secured a job as an electrical engineer, highlighted the robot's ability to tackle a significant challenge faced by civic bodies: removing floating waste from ponds and lakes quickly and efficiently. The robot's deployment at Shiv Ganga pond is a testament to the students' hard work and the administration's commitment to practical solutions.

The impact of this innovation extends beyond the immediate cleaning of the pond. Dumka Deputy Commissioner Abijit Sinha expressed confidence that the robot would help maintain the pond's cleanliness during the Shravani Mela, encouraging more students to develop practical solutions to real-life problems. The project also strengthens the identity of 'Made in Jharkhand' and 'Made in Dumka'. Additionally, a water filtration plant has been installed at the pond to further improve water quality and maintain water levels.

This engineering project from Jharkhand demonstrates the power of student innovation to create tangible, positive change. The robot's deployment at a sacred site during a significant religious event is a testament to its potential to make a real difference in the community. As the robot begins its operations, it will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for the pilgrims and the local ecosystem.
